The language of hybrid racing
Compromised running, break schemes, the transition zone — the vocabulary you’ll hear at the start line, in plain terms.
Hybrid race
The generic name for the sport: a continuous, for-time endurance event combining repeated running intervals with functional-fitness work stations. Also called functional fitness racing.
The standard hybrid format
The common mass-participation layout of 8 x 1 km runs, each followed by one of 8 functional-fitness stations, completed back-to-back against the clock.
Compromised running
Running on legs already fatigued from a preceding strength station. Cardio may feel fine while the muscles won't fire, slowing your splits — a defining challenge of the sport.
Transition zone
The generic term for the area between the run track and the work stations where athletes move from one element to the next. The clock keeps running, so transition speed affects finish time.
Brick session
A training workout that deliberately pairs a strength station with a run so you practice running on pre-fatigued legs, building compromised-running ability.
Break scheme
A pre-planned way to split a high-rep station (like wall balls or burpee broad jumps) into manageable sets — e.g. sets of 10 or a descending ladder — to avoid failure under fatigue.
No-rep
A repetition that doesn't meet the movement standard (insufficient squat depth, missed target height, incomplete extension) and therefore doesn't count, forcing the athlete to repeat it.
Pacing
Distributing effort across the whole continuous event so you don't blow up early; treating the race as one sustained effort rather than 16 isolated pieces.
Redlining
Pushing heart rate and effort past a sustainable threshold, usually early in the race, leading to a sharp performance drop later. Most common on the opening SkiErg or sled push.
Negative split
Completing the second half of the race (or a segment) faster than the first by holding back early and finishing strong — the disciplined alternative to going out hot.
Strength endurance
The capacity to sustain repeated submaximal strength efforts (sleds, carries, lunges, wall balls) without failing — a core fitness quality the format demands alongside running.
Division
A competition category defining load and standards: commonly Open (standard loads), Pro (heavier), Doubles (pairs sharing the work), and Relay (teams of four).
Doubles
A division where two athletes run every kilometer together and split the station work between them, rewarding smart work-division and minimal transitions.
Relay
A division where a team of four divides the course across segments, tagging in so the right athlete handles the right leg of the race.
Work split
In Doubles or Relay, the agreed division of reps, meters, or segments between teammates — planned to match each athlete's strengths and minimize lost time.
Sled push / sled pull
Stations requiring athletes to drive a loaded sled forward (push, 50 m) or haul it toward them (pull, 50 m). Both spike heart rate and heavily fatigue the legs for the next run.
